“Out at Sea” is a darkly comic tale of hunger and democracy. It is a captivating show that tells the story of three hungry men adrift at sea on a raft. Created by Polish absurdist playwright Slawomir Mrozek, this darkly comic production delves into the depths of human nature and the power dynamics that emerge in desperate situations.

As the men manipulate and trick each other in a desperate quest for food, their survival becomes increasingly uncertain. In a surprising twist, they turn to democracy to determine who among them will become the next meal. This thought-provoking exploration of hunger and power is brought to life through the rich theatrical elements and unconventional scenography employed by director Ingmars Čaklais, a Latvian stage director known for his international experience working with amateur theatres.

Presented by the Birmingham Little Theatre, “Out at Sea” offers a unique theatrical experience with its production language in Latvian (simultaneous translation in English available for each show). The production features the creative contributions of video artist Asatuur Keim from London, costumes designer Gunta Larmane from Wolverhampton, and sound operator Maris Roberts Caklais from Birmingham. Adding to the talent behind the scenes, specially invited choreographer Alda Skrastiņa from Latvia brings her expertise to enhance the show’s captivating performance.

“Out at Sea” received prestigious awards at the International Festival “PLATS Solis” Bergen 2023. The play garnered the Best Actress and Best Stage Director awards, recognizing the exceptional talent and vision behind the production. It also won the Silver Award for its overall excellence and the Audience Sympathy award for its ability to connect with viewers.
The esteemed jury of the Latvian Amateur Theatre festival “Performance of the Year 2023 in Latvia” bestowed a distinguished recognition upon our production for its outstanding achievement in the realm of “Conceptual scenography”.

About the company.

This impressive production is brought to you by the Birmingham Little Theatre, which was founded in 2018 by Latvians residing in Birmingham. 
The stage director, Ingmars Čaklais, brings with him extensive international experience working with Latvian amateur theatres for several decades. 
Creating captivating visual elements is video artist Asatuurs Keim from London, whose creative contributions enhance the production. 
Gunta Larmane, a talented costume designer from Wolverhampton, adds her artistic touch with stunning costumes created in her small sewing salon. 
Maris Roberts Caklais, a space engineering student in Wales, takes on the role of sound operator, ensuring impeccable audio experiences. 
Alda Skrastiņa, a professional dance teacher and leader of a youth folk dance group in Jelgava, Latvia, brings her expertise as the choreographer. Now, let’s meet the talented actors who bring this production to life.
 Mrs. Dace Cakla, a master’s degree holder in law from Latvia, is currently engaged in family business in Birmingham and has been a part of various theatrical projects since childhood.
 Ms. Inara Ugore, who works in the logistical sector in Dudley while caring for her loved ones in Latvia, finds joy and fulfillment in being active on stage and awakening her hidden talents.
 Ms. Dinara Klepere, a theatre directing graduate from Latvia, now resides in Birmingham as the single guardian to her grandson. Despite her circumstances, she has pursued her childhood dream of becoming an actress. 
Ms. Elza Umure, who has a strong passion for dance since childhood, has been working in pedagogy and events in London and Nottingham. She is known for baking world-class salty pies and embraces speed and dynamism in her various creative outlets. 
Lastly, we have Ms. Katrina Tamisare, originally from Latvia, who is currently studying a Master’s programme in Business Management in Sweden, additionally she showcases her talents at the Stockholm improvisation theatre.
