Paranormal Activity review

The original Paranormal Activity was a hit 2007 horror film in the found footage genre. It spawned multiple sequels all in the same vein – hauntings. This isn’t a stage version of the film or any of its sequels however. Although it is of a similar theme, it has its own story which was specifically written as a play by Levi Holloway.

We meet American couple James (James Bye – Eastenders) and Lou (Hannah Sinclair Robinson) who have recently relocated to London. Lou has been having mental health issues since the death of her parents in a house fire. The move is seen as a new start, and the couple are looking to start a family. However, Lou’s issues seem to have followed them across the pond. She is convinced that she is experiencing “paranormal activity”.

We are told from the off (via a podcast that Lou is listening to) that buildings aren’t haunted – people are. So is Lou haunted? She believes she is, and it’s not long before things start going bump in the night.

We’re lulled into a false sense of security for the first twenty minutes but when things start, they start!

There are jump scares aplenty, and screams aplenty from the audience. The scares and effects are state of the art and extremely clever. You can cut the tension with a knife and it builds throughout to a shocking climax. It’s absolutely terrifying.

This isn’t just a scare by numbers piece however, at its core it’s a strong drama with excellent performances from all the cast. It’s also been expertly directed by Felix Barrett.

The set which a two-level house is fantastic, and really gets you in the centre of all the action. Sound and lighting are also superb – setting the mood and delivering the fear and tension perfectly.

A must-see piece of theatre which is a masterclass in suspense, but NOT for the faint hearted.

You’ll be sleeping with the light on for weeks!

Five stars. See it if you dare!
