Slava’s Snow Show review

Slava’s Snow Show, The Alexandra Theatre Birmingham.

A pre-Christmas seasonal treat at the Alex this week.

Created by Slava Polunin – a Russian mime artist and clown – this is an old school circus style clown show with a theatrical twist.

There are no words used. Music is used throughout as well as vocalisations – but no words. But none are needed. It’s a series of scenarios – all based around winter. Nine performers (clowns) perform sketches that are all intertwined. Some sketches are slapstick, some are moving, some both at the same time. Some are absolutely hilarious and really laugh out loud. The smallest movement had the audience in stitches.

Lighting is used to maximum effect to create some stunning visuals. There is also smoke, ticker tape, webs, and inflatable balls that all evoke winter. It’s a visual delight. A feast for the eyes.

The show has simplicity but also absolute brilliance at the same time. The performers are so skilled and masters of their craft. The audience lapped up every second. They were hanging off every moment.

To hear the laughter and joy coming from the children in the auditorium was wonderful. What was even better was that is was coming from the adults too. This is a show for all the ages. A sheer delight.

No spoilers but the ending is the most chaos I’ve ever seen in a theatre! Absolute joy. Although I did feel for the theatre staff that have to clear up after!

You’ll not regret seeing this show. Get a ticket!

5 stars. Mesmerising.
