Lieutenant Lempriere & His Parachute Queens by Birmingham History Theatre

The story of George Lempriere, the famous Balloonist or “aeronaut” who lived in Handsworth, Birmingham. He was renowned for his shows from the 1880s to the 1920s which featured “The Parachute Queens”. These daring young women ascended the skies sitting on a trapeze hanging from below the balloon from heights of over 5000 feet.

George Lempriere was once a well known local aeronaut and showman who has now largely been forgotten. George spent most of his life in Handsworth and developed a highly successful career offering balloon flights and demonstrations throughout the U.K.and Europe. He  was a great showman  and introduced parachute jumps from his “Parachute Queens”  and later in life became a theatrical agent. 

Birmingham Theatre Company will use film, song and material from his archive to tell the story of his extraordinary career and introduce some of the daring young women who worked with him to thrill audiences more than 100 years ago
